(This turned out to sound more like a march, perhaps, but it’s still in 6/8 time.) And I had TWO horns to work with, so it’s also a perpetual motion movement, with the horns trading off every two measures or so. The trombone – an honorary horn – plays throughout, with no chance to breathe, protesting its ill treatment with an outburst at the end. The asterisk in the title refers to a footnote at the end of the score, “the Horns will Play.”
