The words of this song are by Pierre Louÿs, a Belgian writer who published a collection of prose poems called “Les chansons de Bilitis” (The songs of Bilitis), allegedly translated from an ancient Greek text but actually his own original work. He claimed that Bilitis was a contemporary and acquaintance of Sappho, but she never really existed.
Many of the poems were deeply shocking when they appeared in the 1890s, though they probably wouldn’t raise many eyebrows nowadays. The subject of this particular one is nothing more scandalous than someone (presumably the imaginary Bilitis) enjoying a lovely spring day on a Mediterranean island after a little shower of rain that hasn’t quite stopped falling yet.
