This is one of Schubert’s best-loved songs, the dialogue between melody and bass line makes it well-suited to be transcribed for an ensemble. The tune is, quite simply, one of the loveliest that he ever wrote. In this deliberately straightforward arrangement the oboe takes the lead in the first verse (something of a test of stamina), shadowed by the bassoon, while the flute and horn are to the fore in the second.
