After a strenuous holiday walking a large chunk of the G10 in the High Pyrenees in the South of France, this is a fond memory of the clear mountain air, the high-pitched squeaking of the marmots, not forgetting Dave the cook with his "jipper". Happy days! It is a bit of fun written originally for Andrew Hughes and his Greyhound Ensemble, a talented Young People’s Orchestra from Alcester. This fuller orchestral version was written as a bit of fun for my musician friends in Aberystwyth. The real marmots were first seen near the Breche de Roland above Gavarnie high in the French Pyrenees, the toy ones in all the tacky souvenir shops in the town below. The harp part could be played on a piano if necessary - a la Canteloube. The marmot squeaky toys can be distributed among the orchestra and played by any wind player who is free, or any string player clever enough to multi-task by playing with their feet and hands simultaneously.
