2. Blues: The cornet was born at a time when rudimentary jazz music and dance first appeared. The cakewalk, ragtime and blues all became poular in the 1890s, so a piece in this style has been included. I have opted for a slow 12-bar blues that mimics the gentle syncopation and uncomplicated harmonies of early performers on piano or guitar. A melody with plenty of "blue" notes is improvised over this. Thesequence is repeated three times, the first dominated by the cornet soloist; next, trombones with the cornet playing a muted descant; then finally the full band.
