A rather large-scale work for being in just one-movement, it might have been subtitled, The Bells, or better yet, The Chimes, from the principal theme, which not only is suggestive of chimes but has a set of chimes (tubular bells) accompanying it. The long passacaglia introduction builds to a climax, at which time this theme is introduced. The music meanders from theme to theme with the principal theme coming back now and again, though there is no sense of rondo form. The work closes with a repeat of the introduction and a splash of crashing chords based on the chime theme.
