The Saxophone Sonata is a three movement piece. It explores the relationships between varying levels of tonality and atonality. The first movement is a fast, essentially key-centric piece, in a conventional ABA structure. The second movement is slow and although without an established key, still refers to a tonal centre. The third movement is jazzy, beginning with a theme of almost cliched tonality, then veering off into atonality before its triumphant tonal conclusion.
