During the early 1990s I played in a trio that contained a fascinating mix of cultural and musical influences: an American (me, mainstream jazz), a Yugoslav guitarist (exotic Balkan rhythms) and a young Finnish electric bassist (funk). We also had an interesting way of working; nothing was ever written down - until now. Pieces achieved their finished form (often rigidly structured despite sections of free playing) through a process of improvisation, trial and error. "Mirror Drops", one of our more accessible pieces, was an audience favorite on gigs. The version here was transcribed from a rehearsal tape. "Mirror Drops" was recorded and broadcast over the radio in 1995 by the Finnish Broadcasting Company.
