Benedicat is a blessing prayer which is Trinitarian in form and uses word painting techniques. Different techniques were used to depict the different words used such as Pater, or Father, the depiction of the heavenly host and choirs of angels, Filius, or Son, the duality of Jesus' nature as God and Man and a depiction of his Passion through chromaticism and minor tonalities. Lastly, Spiritus Sanctus, or Holy Spirit, depicted by the floating sound above the entire chorus like a dove, descending on Jesus during His Baptism.
