El Grillo translates as “The Cricket”. The music was a song by French composer of the Renaissance Josquin des Prez (c1450/1455-1521). This was considered his most popular song. Scholars have suggested that des Prez wrote the song to either honour or make fun of his colleague at the House of Sforza, an Italian court singer named Carlo Grillo.

This arrangement for 3-octaves handbells, and optional tambour/hand drum and shaker/tambourine, is designed to be shorter, and accessible, yet ensuring all ringers have interesting parts, includes handbell techniques martellato, gyro and martellato lift
