Voluntary in G
I wrote this Voluntary following a visit to Shepperton, where I was born and brought up, but which I left in my early twenties. On entering St Nicholas's Church, I found a new glass inner door dedicated to the memory of Alan Rosewell, the organist when I was a choirboy there. I recalled how, Sunday after Sunday, he would improvise as the congregation left the building. In this piece I have tried to capture something of that improvisation, though I cannot pretend that my memory, after forty years has been good enough to recall any of the actual music which he played.
