The poem (in the Irish langauge - translation and pronunciation guide included) is Jacobite in sentiment and looks to the restoration of the House of Stuart. The tune dates back at least to the 1750s and has been used for this poem and also, curiously, for a Williamite song, ’The Boyne Water’.
