This sad song for flugelhorn/trumpet, bassoon, harp and strings was lifted from the third movement of my first symphony and given the same title as that movement–"Nails." Originally composed as a vocal piece, I was never able to come up with satisfactory lyrics, but the original idea of Mary lamenting the crucifixion of her Son, Jesus, remains the point of this sad song.
My "Lacrimosa dies illa" also came from this melody.
