JS Bach’s Cantata 26 is a short work comprising of a chorus/chorale, 2 arias and a final chorale. The text is concerned with human life passing by swiftly, vividly depicted in the opening chorus with the words "The life of man is empty and fleeting like a mist". The orchestral accompaniment depicts the mist with rushing scales and a restless mood. The idea occurred to me that the musical ideas could work in a double ensemble setting. The scoring requires 2 recorder groups with an additional supporting bass recorder. The overall effect is an antiphonal one with the chorale melody seperated between the 2 groups. Great fun to play!
