Pastorale for piano solo - re-edited
This piece needs legato pedal with each minim in the bass in order to sustain it and to enable the player to articulate the quaver figuration above it. The work is mostly legato throughout with light rubato at phrase ends. In the middle section of running scales and patterns emphasise the melody quotations with slight rubato. The final repeat of the main theme should be played more slowly and with a powerful but melodic fortissimo. The 'programme' of the piece is a horse-drawn cart winding its way through the countryside until it and its farmer driver thankfully reach a welcoming home!
