This American folksong, with its many verses, invites the variety of treatments that MANYWAYS implies. Perhaps the first and last verses could be performed by all? In between, each verse can have one or more instruments added. The order(indeed, the actual instrument(s) used) is at the discretion of the classroom teacher. Violins, flutes––any melodic instrument–– may be substituted for any other! The important thing is that the children should enjoy singing and playing together and, in doing so, acquire a better sense of what constiutes good intonation.
