Originally begun in 2002 and abandoned half completed, this single movement for string quartet was revisited in 2017. Substantially reworked and expanded, it now uses its original material to their full potential and may yet be joined by further movements. The opening bars exploit the raw sound of open strings, the fundamental intervals of fourths and fifths and the resulting dissonance of major seconds. The slower section that follows uses the same material, transformed in mood, with touches of chromatic harmony. As the movement progresses, the same building blocks reappear in different forms, sometimes transposed and sometimes in new rhythmic guises. The audio file was produced using NotePerformer 2.
