Can you play Montis Czardas? the number of times I heard this question asked as a request, to the first violin of the Dussek Ensemble of London which I was a founder member of many years ago; I cant say I am surprised at the request for this piece by the Italian maestro Vittorio Monti, for it scored the most important success of his professional life making him a true immortal, and was soon arranged for all kinds of ensembles.

Originally composed for either violin or mandolin, here it is in an arrangement (of which I am sure there are many) for string quartet, and any string quartet that does the rounds of playing for wedding receptions, business lunches and dinners, cocktail soires, coming of age birthday parties and so on will surely be requested to play this music at some time; or it could even be used as a recital encore to show off the virtuosity of your first violin. I must say I enjoyed arranging it, as it was the perfect foil to the intricacies of my second string quartet, which I also happen to be working on at the moment.

Which method of viewing music should I use?

Score Exchange has two methods to display previews of music: seView which uses regular html and javascipt and the Scorch plug-in from Avid which needs to be downloaded and installed onto your computer. Both have advantages and disadvantages:

seView

seView, is the most compatible option. You should be able to view music on all modern web browsers including most mobile devices. Even if your device does not support javascript you should still be able to preview at least page one of the music.

You do not need to install any additional software to use seView.

Scorch

Scorch is a free plug-in from Avid for displaying and printing music. It can also play the music that you're seeing. As modern web browsers are updated, Scorch is no longer compatible with many browsers. Scorch has never been compatible with mobile devices and some web browsers on Mac computers.

If your web browser does not install Scorch automatically, you can click here to download and install scorch manually.
