In the Seventeenth Century in Germany the Chorale Prelude established itself as one of the important instrumental forms, and J.S. Bach�s Chorale Preludes are among the greatest in the genre of organ literature. Reinken, Buxtehude and Pachelbel composed masterly works in this form showing consummate skill in contrapuntal, fugal and intricate devices of expressive ornamentation. As in this work by Parry where he uses the beautiful Hymn Abide with me as a cantus firmus or subject, composers in the earliest examples of the genre utilised the Gregorian chants to supply a line or phrase to expend their artistic powers of extemporisation.
