The Carnival Overture, Op. 30, was written at the request of maestro, Jerome Summers, for the first concert of the his final season as music director of the International Symphony Orchestra of Port Huron, Michigan and Sarnia, Ontario. The request was for a work of around 8 minutes in duration and in the spirit of Shostakovich’s ’Festive Overture.’nnThe composer wished to depict scenes from a typical county fair of the mid-1950/60s, involving various rides, animals, attractions, and fireworks.nnThe work was first premiered with in Port Huron, MI on Oct. 16, 2010 with the International Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jerome Summers.
