I wrote "Chains" on June 7, 2002 in response to the news that Martin Burnham, missionary to the Philippines, had been killed after over a year of captivity by Muslim rebels.
Currently, more Christians suffer persecution than at any time in history. For more information, see the many web sites concerning persecution of Christians, such as Voice of the Martyrs at http://www.persecution.com and http://www.persecution.net Also Open Doors at http://www.opendoors.org.au/ and International Christian Concern at http://www.persecution.org/
Lead Sheet available under parts.
Verse 1: Lord, we remember the chains of Your friends Suffering for witness to life without end. Christ, Your sorrow brought joy and release So, in their chains, give them peace.
Verse 2: Lord, we remember the chains that now bind Those who are tortured in body and mind. Christ, Your rising gives hope for our plea So, from their chains, set them free.
(Bridge) God, protect and defend the accused. Give them courage when they are abused. Keep them faithful when tragedies fall and Show them Your love most of all.
Verse 3: Lord, we remember the chains that distress. May Your church prosper, though under duress. Christ, Your kingdom defeats every foe So, by the chains may it grow.
