White (1800-1879) and is in his 1844 tunebook, "Sacred Harp." Mel Bay’s book, "Early American Folk Hymns," states "White was a newspaper editor and singing master, but is best remembered as one of the compilers of ’The Sacred Harp.’ The interpolated lines and the chorus mark this as of probable camp meeting origin."
The lyrics are based on two scripture passages, Lamentations 3:22,23 and 1 Peter 5:7.
