St Luke (Saviour, who didst healing give)
Hymn for the Feast of St Luke
Like my hymn tune Newton West Kirby (Stars of the morning, so gloriously bright), this tune was composed about five minutes before the morning service in which it was first sung at St Matthew’s, Bethnal Green, when it became apparent that the tune in the hymn book was not suitable for the congregation. This occasion was the Feast of St Luke (18th October), the music being composed for the words ’Saviour, who didst healing give’ (NEH 194). If the music seems as if it could have been written in another age, that's all well and good! The intention was to produce a tune that was at home in its context.
