In 1826 when he was only seventeen years old, Felix Mendelssohn composed the overture to Shakespeares A Midsummer Nights Dream. Seventeen years later the rest of the incidental music for the play was composed which included the Wedding March, which has firmly established itself as the favourite Recessional at wedding ceremonies. This remarkable work shows a musical maturity and in some respects is not surpassed by anything he composed in later years.
