Saxie Pike was a drum major with considerable flair at his task. He marched during the Civil War, and was a favorite among his peers. The piece dates to the Civil War, and is a good example of the show pieces that were done during that era. The original was written for a saxhorn brass band which has been converted to the modern concert band.
