This is based on a song by Franz Schubert – "Die Stadt" from Schwanengesang, D. 957, written just before his death in 1828. It's not much of a song, merely a sketch lasting only 90 seconds. The words of the song, by Heinrich Heine, tell of a lost love, but I took the eerie mood of the little piece and tried to depict the same city today – a menacing and dangerous place. Also included is a very brief quote from a more modern urban song, a much better song about urban life.
