The Modal Dances can be considered 'a collection of seven short pieces for wind trio', and as such any of the movements, or indeed groups of movements, may be used as independent interludes or short suits unto themselves.
The writing of Ionian was inspired by the misguided notion that this mode was regarded by the Ancient Greeks as the mode of insanity. This was actually attributed to the Ancient Greek mode of Ionian, of which the modern Ionian bears no resemblance, but the notion stuck with me. To this end movement was written with a cheerily mirthful madness in mind.
