This second Beethoven piano sonata, an earlier work, that I have arranged for string orchestra and also for quintet with 2 cellos is somewhat easier than the first, opus 26.
The rationale for this kind of arrangement from the keyboard original is very well stated in the introduction by John Adams to the Sitkovetsy arrangement of the Bach Goldberg Variations for strings in the 1995 Nonesuch CD. Mr.Adams states that such an arrangement "should be… a cause for celebration.
