"Laika" is a short tribute to the famous Moscow stray that made an historic trip into space on November 3, 1957. "Laika" is programmatic in construction and is meant to musically illustrate the separate phases of Laikas' selection, training, launch into space, and sad demise. I wanted in the beginning to invoke the feeling of emotionless science choosing its subject, then the training which likely involved the care, feeding, and probably playful bonding with Laika as she trained and gained Soviet and world notoriety, then the lonely trip for her in space culminating in her over-heating and death after perhaps seven minutes of flight - a harp plays seven patterns that fade away.
