This precious jewel of English Renaissance music is, is its original form, scored for 7 voices – though the 5th and 6th of these (commonly the 1st and 2nd tenor) frequently sing a2. Although an indispensable part of the repertoire of many accomplished choirs, the number of independent parts puts this piece beyond the reach of many a smaller ensemble. The purpose of this adaptation is to make the work performable by choirs of modest forces: indeed, by as few as four voices (SATB).

I have endeavoured to preserve (or at least to mark) as many of the imitative points as possible and to balance the fulness of the harmony against the linearity of the counterpoint that generates it. At every turn there are compromises; and yet I hope that enough of the substance of the piece has been preserved to make singing or listening to is an agreeable experience.
