Huehuecoyotl (juvenilia, piano)
In Aztec mythology, Huehuecoyotl ("old coyote") is the trickster god of music, dance, song.
It’s essentially a set of variations built around a fast-slow-fast structure. First we hear the theme against a simple quarter note rhyhtm, followed by a syncopated rendition afterwards. We then proceed to the slow movement: a simple accompaniment in quarter notes again, and then a polyrythmic rendition ending on an inconclusive Eb. Finally we return to the fast part of the structure, where an Albert bass renditio, is followed by some arpeggio-fireworks. Huehuecoyotl then vanishes in a puff of smoke.
