The texture of the piece is pretty heavy and on "Sibelius" the solo part is all but swamped for the most part. This is intentional - I want the soloist to have to struggle with the orchestra to add to the drama of the text - and it works in performance. The last few pages hint at the Dies Irae that never was. I ran out of steam and it wasn't finished in time for the first performance in 1996. It still isn't.
