This movement is supposed to tell a store of a person going into un unknown world and see the far reaches, which later moves into chaos as the person is lost in a bottomless pit before coming back out and see the far reaches again but in a different light.
The opening theme is supposed to be flowing and magical, which slowly become demented and eventually turns into the suffering of the pit.
When the opening theme returns it is more relaxed and the melody is not as dominate as it was before.
