The beloved Air (or Aria) from Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3, BWV 1068, in an arrangement for any solo instrument in C (e.g. oboe, flute, violin) and any keyboard instrument (e.g. piano, harpsichord, organ).
Its nickname Air on the G string stems from an arrangement from 1871 by violinist August Wilhelm, where he transposed the work down so the melody could be played on the G string alone.
As the original is intended for performance with a continuo group, the keyboard part has had the harmony fleshed out where appropriate. Notes that are not present in the original's Basso, Viola or Violin II parts are indicated in parentheses.
For this arrangement, I have used the ca. 1753-54 score scribed by Christian Friedrich Penzel as the main source. This version features the ornaments most early music practitioners perform this work with. One difference is the final measure, where the 1753-54 score places Violin I's trill on beat 2, rather than on the off-beat C#. Here, the arrangement follows the 1731 Violin I part scribed by Johann Ludwig Krebs, as this appears to be more stylistically appropriate.
