The work commonly known as Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is in reality two chorale settings, Jesus bleibet meine Freunde and Wohl mir, daß ich Jesum habe from J.S. Bach's cantata, Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben (Heart and mouth and deed and life), BWV 147.
Both chorales take their stanzas from the hymn Jesu, meiner Seelen Wonne, by Martin Janus.
The English title rose to popularity with an arrangement for piano by Dame Myra Hess, released in 1926. The source of the English translation is unknown, but commonly attributed to poet Robert Bridges.
Set for any solo instrument in C (e.g. flute, oboe, violin) and keyboard instrument (e.g. piano, harpsichord, organ). The accompaniment is a reduction of the orchestral parts, choir and basso, with additional fleshing out of the harmony where appropriate.
