Big Bow is a big wise old teddy bear who always wears a big bow tie. When he takes a trip to the circus he observes a baby elephant ' Nellie' being made to perform tricks, and he boldly sets about releasing her and leading her away.
The music is in the style of a military march, but is set for just eight instruments. The opening section conveys Big Bow stepping out, the middle section depicts the performing elephant then, after a climactic imposition there is a triumphant reprise of the opening theme. The introduction & fanfares are intended to convey a circus atmosphere.
