"Ave Maria", by the early Renaissance Flemish composer, Jean Mouton, is transcribed into modern notation and makes use of an adaptation of the "comfort text" from Isaiah, also used by Handel as the opening recitativo accompagnato in "Messiah". This polyphonic piece, meant to be sung "a cappella", but presented with piano reduction for rehearsal purposes, is not only beautiful. It is also an excellent introduction to the singing of polyphonic music, and can be used by high school, college, and advanced church choirs, both in concert and worship settings.
