As a firm proponent of a nationalistic Russian music he was a member of The Five, with Balakirev, Rimsky-Korsakov, Mussorgsky and Borodin. Overall, his music is still little known, the Orientale, no. 9 of his violin and piano collection Kaleidoscope (Op. 50), being the exception. I have paired this with another Kaleidoscope piece, the Petite Caprice, for Flute Choir (or quartet). The latter will produce a few guffaws in rehearsal and considerable foot-tapping from an audience; the former is a charmingly ’eastern’ jeu d’esprit.
