Monti’s Czardas, arranged for Mallet Ensemble, with a touch of the exotic rumba!
Csárdás is a traditional Hungarian folk dance whose name derives from csárda, an old Hungarian term for a roadside tavern. Its origins can be traced to the 18th-century verbunkos, a style of music and dance used for military recruitment.
The csárdás is characterised by dramatic changes of tempo. It usually begins with a slow and expressive lassú before launching into a lively and exhilarating friss. This contrast between lyrical passages and dazzling virtuosity has inspired many classical composers, including Liszt, Brahms, Delibes, Johann Strauss II, Sarasate and Tchaikovsky.
Vittorio Monti’s Czardas, composed in 1904, is one of the best-known instrumental examples of the form. Originally written for violin and piano, it has become an internationally celebrated concert showpiece.
This exciting arrangement for Xylophone, Vibraphone and Marimba preserves the expressive character and exhilarating energy of Monti’s original while introducing a distinctive rumba flavour. It is an entertaining and rewarding choice for concerts, recitals, competitions and percussion showcases.
