The variations become progressively more challenging for the player, requiring a high level of technical proficiency, and pushing the trombone to the extremes of the register, both high and low. The trombone is also given an opportunity to show a rare and gentle side to the instrument. Following the second variation the trombone leads the piece into a slow legato section that demonstrates the instrument�s full sonorous tone and control.
