I was asked to write music for a school production with the brief that it should be 'live' music, although it was to be played from recordings. To do this I wrote the pieces in Sibelius (ensuring that they were physical playable, just as an extra element of challenge), before recording them using a friends sound library.
The play focuses on the gang mentality of a group of teenagers, and so I wrote music with a 'tribal', percussive, aggressive edge using low brass, bass guitars (plural!) and percussion for the first three sections. For the final part, where the gangs machinations have led to betrayal, breakdown, and break ups I reimagined the music from the previous sections into this melancholic piece for piano. The piece can be performed by one person, although it is also playable as piano four hands.
