The Overture for Monkey Music, wherein the King of the Monkeys is born from a stone egg and salutes the four directions before getting straight down to his career of mischief and mayhem. Actually, any correspondences between the Chinese novel "Journey to the West" and the musical events in Monkey Music are purely coincidental. This piece for chamber orchestra takes a pastoral turn when a bullfrog (played by temple blocks) erupts into unwanted song halfway through, accompanied by distant thunder from 4 timpani. A lot of ink gets wasted saying what a piece of music is "about", and to what end?
