The piece is popularly known as Handel's Sarabande but it is believed that he originally wrote it as an aria for his opera Almira (1705) and reused the aria in his very successful opera Rinaldo (1711).
If played by massed cellos in four sections (as opposed to four individual cellos), there is the option for the short middle section to be played by one cello from each section, for extra contrast in texture.
