This song about the long standing traditional hop harvest was first published, described as "A New Song addressed to the Farmers of Kent", in the "Kentish Gazette" on 4th September 1776. Recently Bob Kenward included it in a collection he compiled for the Kent volume of the educational project "Singing Histories". The recording is of the first complete performance, given in St. Mildred's Church, Canterbury on 4th July, 2026 by The Canterbury Singers, director Jon Williams.
