Inori (prayer) was written for pianists Maho Nabeshima and Izumi Tateno. About 10 years ago, Mr. Tateno had a stroke and lost the use of his right hand. He is nonetheless an amazing pianist and I am honored to be writing for him. The piece will be premiered by the duo October 29 at Musicasa in Tokyo.

The piece was written in memoriam for Tadao Nabeshima, Mahos father who passed away last year. The prayer is in three parts: a call to worship, lamentations, and a blessing. The primary musical motive is the hymn This is My Song (to the tune of Finlandia), a favorite hymn of Mr. Nabeshima and myself.
