The comedy is inspired by a fatto di cronaca really happened: the story of Antoinette Frapolli, milanese Lady kidnapped by pirates in 1805, born in the harem of Mustafa Bey of Algiers-Ibn-Ibrahim, and then returned to Italy. The melodrama was represented for the first time at the Teatro San Benedetto in Venice and had immediately a great success. Still today, along with the Barber of Seville and William Tell, is one of the works by Rossini represented in opera houses.
