In "Lithuanian Folk Music" (1990) for 15 strings I have used 17 melodies from Dzukija region (South-Eastern Lithuania) taken from the collection "Dzūkų melodijos" ("Dzūkai Melodies") compiled and prepared by ethnomusicologist Genovait etkauskait. Monodic style is predominant in the Dzūkai people'ū songs: these authentic Dzūkija melodies that develop polyphonically are exclusively used in "Lithuanian Folk Music". The material of my work is based entirely on these melodies which serve as the themes and are elaborated in the dominating technique of canons. So called "small" canons, consisting of 2, 3, 4 or 5 voices, are blended together into the "bigger" ones. Different rhythmic forms with augmented and diminished themes etc. are used. In some voices the themes are repeated many times as in repetitive music. The musical material of the composition is restrained; the means of expression are related to the aesthetics of the minimal music. The whole creation is conceived to be a kind of South-Eastern Lithuanian "sounding map". It is like Lithuania from a bird's-eye view. The work is recorded by the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra conducted by Juha Kangas and released on Finlandia Records (Warner Classics International).
