Of the various historical types of string trio, this one follows the Concertant Trio where each participant shares an equal part of the dialogue.
The whole piece is organised around types of musical process using modal materials.
The outer parts of the piece are perpetual motion passages, the last of which is a rigorous rhythmic pattern interrupted by scalic wave patterns. The central Elegy takes a simple melodic shape that slowly migrates upwards in register and plays with major and minor mode ambiguities.
The title ‘Litorale’ refers to contrasting areas of coastline and tidal movements.
