Mrs MacLeod’s Reel is a popular session tune, existing in a number of versions and under an array of titles – it is even mentioned by Thomas Hardy in his book The Mayor of Casterbridge! Mrs MacLeod is sometimes ‘Miss’, with Irish versions preferring the spelling ‘Mc’, and Scottish ones ‘Mac’. In the Shetland Islands, the tune is often known as ‘Da Broone Coo’ (Brown Cow). A version also exists with the French lyrics ‘Tout le monde à la grippe’ (‘Everyone has a cold’) – listen out for where you would expect the sneezes to come in the chorus!
