The composition of these odes was triggered by a combination of seeing a woodcut by Albrecht Dürer called "St. Michael’s fight against the dragon" and by the text from Revelations xii.7 which was his source of inspiration ("And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven."

The first of these odes was written in 2001, the remaining 4 in 2004.
